The list was transcribed by saxophonist\u00a0Steve Lacy<\/a>\u00a0in 1960.<\/p>\n Enjoy.<\/p>\n Transcript follows.<\/p>\n (Source:\u00a0Heck of a Guy<\/a>; Image above: Thelonious Monk,\u00a0via<\/a>.<\/em>)<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Transcript<\/strong><\/p>\n T.MONK’S ADVICE<\/span>\u00a0(1960)<\/p>\n JUST BECAUSE YOU\u2019RE NOT A\u00a0DRUMMER<\/span>, DOESN\u2019T MEAN YOU DON\u2019T HAVE TO\u00a0KEEP TIME<\/span>.<\/p>\n PAT YOUR FOOT & SING THE MELODY IN YOUR HEAD, WHEN YOU PLAY.<\/p>\n STOP PLAYING ALL THOSE WEIRD NOTES (THAT\u00a0BULLSHIT<\/span>), PLAY THE\u00a0MELODY<\/span>!<\/p>\n MAKE THE DRUMMER SOUND\u00a0GOOD<\/span>.<\/p>\n DISCRIMINATION IS IMPORTANT.<\/p>\n YOU\u2019VE GOT TO DIG IT TO\u00a0DIG<\/span>\u00a0IT, YOU DIG?<\/p>\n ALL REET!<\/p>\n ALWAYS KNOW… (MONK)<\/p>\n IT MUST BE ALWAYS\u00a0NIGHT<\/span>, OTHERWISE THEY WOULDN\u2019T NEED THE\u00a0LIGHTS<\/span>.<\/p>\n LET\u2019S\u00a0LIFT THE BAND STAND<\/span>!!<\/p>\n I WANT TO AVOID THE\u00a0HECKLERS<\/span>.<\/p>\n DON\u2019T PLAY THE\u00a0PIANO PART<\/span>, I\u2019M PLAYING THAT. DON\u2019T LISTEN TO\u00a0ME<\/span>. I\u2019M SUPPOSED TO BE ACCOMPANYING\u00a0YOU<\/span>!<\/p>\n THE\u00a0INSIDE<\/span>\u00a0OF THE TUNE (THE BRIDGE) IS THE PART THAT MAKES THE\u00a0OUTSIDE<\/span>\u00a0SOUND GOOD.<\/p>\n DON\u2019T PLAY\u00a0EVERYTHING<\/span>\u00a0(OR EVERY TIME); LET SOME THINGS\u00a0GO BY<\/span>. SOME MUSIC JUST\u00a0IMAGINED<\/span>. WHAT YOUDON\u2019T<\/span>\u00a0PLAY CAN BE MORE IMPORTANT THAT WHAT YOU\u00a0DO<\/span>.<\/p>\n ALWAYS LEAVE THEM WANTING MORE.<\/p>\n A NOTE CAN BE SMALL AS A PIN OR AS BIG AS THE WORLD, IT DEPENDS ON YOUR\u00a0IMAGINATION<\/span>.<\/p>\n STAY IN\u00a0SHAPE<\/span>! SOMETIMES A MUSICIAN WAITS FOR A GIG, & WHEN IT COMES, HE\u2019S OUT OF SHAPE & CAN\u2019T MAKE IT.<\/p>\n WHEN YOU\u2019RE\u00a0SWINGING<\/span>, SWING SOME\u00a0MORE!<\/span><\/p>\n (WHAT SHOULD WE WEAR TONIGHT?\u00a0SHARP AS POSSIBLE<\/span>!)<\/p>\n DON\u2019T SOUND\u00a0ANYBODY<\/span>\u00a0FOR A GIG, JUST BE\u00a0ON THE SCENE<\/span>. THESE PIECES WERE WRITTEN SO AS TO HAVE SOMETHING TO PLAY, & TO GET CATS\u00a0INTERESTED<\/span>\u00a0ENOUGH TO COME TOREHEARSAL<\/span>.<\/p>\n YOU\u2019VE GOT IT! IF YOU DON\u2019T WANT TO PLAY, TELL A JOKE OR DANCE, BUT IN ANY CASE,\u00a0YOU GOT IT<\/span>! (TO A DRUMMER WHO DIDN\u2019T WANT TO SOLO).<\/p>\n WHATEVER YOU THINK\u00a0CAN\u2019T<\/span>\u00a0BE DONE, SOMEBODY WILL COME ALONG &\u00a0DO IT<\/span>.
